Madidi National Park at Chalalan EcoLodge
5 Days / 4 Nights

Itinerary:

Day 1: La Paz – Rurrenabaque - Chalalán Ecolodge Madidi National Park
Flight from La Paz to Rurrenabaque (6:15 am or 8:20 am) and reception at the airport by one of our guides Transfer to Chalalan office in Rurrenabaque. Travel by motor boat to Chalalan lodge. The trip will take 5½ hours on the Beni and Tuichi rivers. On the way you pass through the Bala Cañon (Bala Gorge) of the Beni River. Then we will enter Madidi National Park, via the Tuichi river. Along the way you will enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Amazon and observe animals along the river, until we arrive at the trailhead to Chalalan. We walk 25 minutes to the Laguna Chalalan, the lake where the lodge is located. Reception and welcome. The guide will show you to your rooms. Welcome lunch. In the afternoon after lunch, we will have a short walk via one of the trails to the Mirador, overlooking the forest and Laguna Chalalan. Your guide will explain about the forest and animals you may see and the traditional and sustainable use of the natural resources in the area. Once at the Mirador, you will observe the beautiful scenery of the Chalalan lagoon and the extensive primary rainforest of Madidi National Park. Return to the lodge for dinner. At night, we will take a canoe ride paddling around the lake for 1 to 2 hours to observe nocturnal animals. (L,D)

Chalalan EcoLodgeDay 2: Chalalán Ecolodge in Madidi National Park
This morning after breakfast, we will have a guided walk for 3 to 4 hours on the Tapare trail or similar, where you will observe animals such as squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, capuchin monkeys and many species of birds such as toucans, macaws, parrots, eagles and guans. Your guide will provide information about the flora and fauna. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon after a short siesta, we will walk another trail to observe more wildlife and learn more about plant and animal behavior. Upon return to the lodge, we will have others activities such as: handicraft activities, canoe ride on the lake, video presentation about our community and the Madidi National Park. Dinner will feature typical foods of the region, such as the "Dunucuabi" traditional - fish wrapped in heliconia leaves. After dinner there will be stories of the community, music, local dance and explanation of traditional customs and indigenous rituals. (B,L,D)

Day 3: Chalalán Ecolodge in Madidi National Park
After breakfast, we will have a walk of about 5 hours by the Silbador, Huaso and Penena trails to the saltlick (Colpa). Here animals come to eat minerals salts. Box lunch. Arrive back to the lodge, swimming and relax in the lake. After dinner, you have the option of a short trail walk or canoeing on the lake. Nightime activities offer possibilities to observe amphibians, nocturnal birds, fishing bats and seeing the red eyes of the caiman. (B,L,D)

Day 4: Chalalán Ecolodge in Madidi National Park
After breakfast, we will walk a longer trail to the Eslabon River. This 6 hours walk takes us deep into pristine rainforest with the opportunity to observe animals such as the black spider monkey, tapir, deer and Peccary. We will have a box lunch at the Eslabon River. After a short rest and exploration of the area, we will return to the lodge along the same trail. When we arrive back to the lodge there will be time to rest or swim and enjoy the lake. Dinner will feature typical food of the area. Tonight we take a short canoe ride to look for the red eyes of caiman and observe other nocturnal wildlife. Later we have our Quechua & Tacana Traditional program where our guides will explain the customs, habits and rituals of the Uchupiamonas indigenous people, during which you'll also enjoy a local traditional drink, and local music and dance with people from our community, San José de Uchupiamonas. Day 5: Chalalán – Rurrenabaque - La Paz
Early after breakfast we will take a short walk on one of our trail. This will be your last opportunity to walk the forest in search of wildlife. Return to the lodge. After lunch we walk the trail to the river, to take the motor boat back to Rurrenabaque. During the boat trip back to Rurrenabaque we recommend you always be attentive, because wildlife is often seen along the river. You may see a jaguar! The trip takes 3 hours. Upon arrival, transfer to the airstrip for your flight back to La Paz. (B)
