Itinerary:

Day 1: La Paz – Rurrenabaque
Make morning Amazonas flight La Paz - Rurrenabaque (50 minutes). Our staff will be waiting to transfer you from the Rurenabaque airstrip to the Chalalán office, where you will complete the required forms to enter Madidi National Park and receive information about your trip. Transfer to a hotel. Remainder of the day free in Rurrenabaque. Lunch and Dinner on your own.

Chalalan EcoLodgeDay 2: Rurrenabaque – Chalalán Ecolodge in Madidi National Park
Continental breakfast at your hotel. Transfer to the Beni river to take our boat to Chalalán. The trip up the Beni and Tuíchi rivers takes about 5½ hours. The boats are equipped with roof, comfortable seats, life jackets, raincoats and a first-aid kit. Packed lunch mid-way on the riverbank. Arrival at the port of Chalalán. 25 minute walk to the Ecolodge. Your luggage is handled by our staff. Settle in at your cabin or room. Welcome lunch. Time to rest or swim in the lagoon. Short walk along the Paraba path to a viewpoint from where you can view the beautiful landscape across the lake, distant mountains and the Madidi rainforest. Return by canoe along the shore of the Chalalán Lake where we can watch birds and monkeys. Theme: hardwood trees and wildlife. Dinner. Night hike to see insects, tarantulas, amphibians, snakes, mice, and nocturnal birds and monkeys. (B,L,D)

Day 3: Chalalán Ecolodge in Madidi National Park
Buffet breakfast. Walk through the jungle on to see and learn about the forest and the wildlife, interpretation of the forest, natural history, ecological processes, medicinal plants, hardwood trees, animal behavior and bird watching. Return to the lodge for lunch. Time to rest or swim in the lagoon. Later in the afternoon there will be a short walk along one of the trails or the showing of a video about the community and the Madidi National Park. Dinner. Night canoe trip on Chalalán Lake to see amphibians, nocturnal birds and caiman, all easily seen because of their glowing red eyes. (B,L,D)

Day 4: Chalalán Ecolodge – Madidi National Park
Buffet breakfast. Morning hike to learn from your guide about the wildlife, medicinal and tropical plants, natural interpretation of the forest, ecological processes, animal behavior, bird watching, and edible and poisonous fungi. Return to the lodge for lunch. Time to rest or swim in the Lake. Afternoon rainforest walk or spend time learning about Tacana handicrafts. Dinner. Either a night hike in search of nocturnal wildlife or a canoe trip on Chalalán Lake. (B,L,D)

Day 5: Chalalán Ecolodge – Madidi National Park
Buffet breakfast. All day rainforest hike. We hike to the Rayamayo and Eslabón rivers. We will find fish in the rivers and in the forest view spider monkeys, tapirs, deer, peccary and maybe even catch a glimpse of a jaguar. Packed lunch by the River Eslabón. Walk along the riverbank of the River Eslabón to see insects, birds or catch fish. Walk back to the Chalalan lake looking for birds and mammals. We finish the hike by boarding a canoe to explore along the shores of the lake for birds, monkeys and to view the vanilla orchid plants. This night we will have a traditional “dunucuabi” dinner of catfish wrapped in leaves or fish á la “tacuara”. After dinner you will experience more of the traditional Quechua – Tacana culture with music and dances by people of the San José de Uchupiamonas community. Your guide will explain the traditional use and the spiritual and cultural significance of the coca leaf. (B,L,D)

Day 6: Chalalán – Rurrenabaque - La Paz
Buffet breakfast. Short walk to the River Tuíchi to take the 3 hour boat trip back to Rurrenabaque. Upon arrival at Rurrenabaque, transfer to the airstrip for the return flight to La Paz. (B)

Programs Include:
  1. Transfer in and out - Rurrenabaque and airport.
  2. One night in hotel in Rurrenabaque before the trip to Chalalan.
  3. Transportation to Chalalan riverside port by covered boats.
  4. Room and board at Chalalan Lodge.
  5. All guided and interpretive programs in the rainforest by bilingual guides.
  6. Reconfirmation or your airline tickets while at Chalalan Lodge.
  7. All taxes.
