Iquitos Area

About....

Located in North-eastern Peru, and accessible only by air or by river, Iquitos is rich in history and indigenous culture and is the starting point to explore the Amazon River and its network of tributaries.

Founded in 1864 as a naval and commercial port it reached its high point in architecture and wealth (for a very few people) during the Rubber Boom of 1879-1912. Iquitos then fell into decline until rainforest tourism became a driving force in the 1980's.

Many rainforest lodges in the area now allow you to explore the richness of the Amazon flora and fauna - towering trees and a vast variety of colorful flowers provide a stunning landscape for an incredible diversity of wildlife. Macaws, parrots, toucans and other spectacular birds (well over a thousand species) as well as over a dozen species of monkeys, tapirs, sloths, anteaters, caimans and colorful frogs are just a few. There are also two species of river dolphins, pink and grey, that are frequently seen at the confluence of rivers. And, of course, there are the piranha which are (falsely) known as being dangerous.
