ITINERARY:

DAY 1: IQUITOS / LODGE
Fly from Lima to Iquitos on morning flight. We begin our Peruvian jungle adventure at the Iquitos Airport. From there we will journey 60 miles to the town of Nauta, the first township founded by the Spanish on the Marañón River. The trip to Nauta takes about an hour and a half.

In Nauta we will visit the Sapi Sapi Lagoon where we will see such species as the paiche (largest Amazonian fish), and regional turtles (taricaya, charapa), as well as a brief history of Nauta at the Centenary Square.

From Nauta board our boat and travel up the Marañon River to visit Fundo Casual, a tropical forest run by local residents, where we will see different species of local fauna. Arrival at the lodge where we will receive a greeting by a member of the Kukama Kukamiria ethnic group who will conduct a ritual to prepare us to get the energy and strength of nature. You will be shown to your bungalow followed by lunch. In the afternoon we will go for a walk in the forest surrounding the lodge and a visit to our observation tower for a stunning view of the river and forest. After dinner, there will be a conversation on myths and legends of the Amazon.

DAY 2: PACAYA SAMIRIA NATIONAL RESERVE / LODGE
After breakfast we will go to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, with a boxed-lunch on board, to an area called “Nauta Caño”. During our excursion we will search for pink and gray freshwater dolphins.

We will also be immersed in the wide variety of flora and fauna the reserve offers. The first thing that will draw your attention is how the river water perfectly reflects the sky, clouds, vegetation and large trees along the river banks. Visitors will have the sensation of sailing between endless mirrors, which is why Pacaya Samiria is also known as “the Jungle of Mirrors”.

We will also go for a walk through the flooded forests, where we will try to see some primates and sloths. During the journey we can also observe a variety of birds and the traditional Amazonian subsistence fishing practice.

Next, we will return to the lodge to visit the women’s crafts center (seasonal) of the San Jorge community, known for their work with natural Chambira fiber and Wingo or gourd carving. Afterwards, you will have down time, followed by dinner. After dinner a guide will explain some of the myths and legends of the Peruvian Amazon.

DAY 3: VISIT 20 DE ENERO / OVERNIGHT CAMPING IN THE RESERVE
After breakfast we will go visit the community of Veinte de Enero (January 20) in the Reserve to appreciate the different jobs held by local residents organized as groups for natural resource management in the Reserve. These activities include Aguaje Palm fruit gathering, boat building and fish farms.

Then we will journey to camping area to set up our tents (lunch on board or camp) followed by an exploratory journey looking for wildlife such as primates, sloths and birds. After dinner, we will go by boat to search for nocturnal wildlife such as frogs, caiman, night birds and maybe even the Night Monkey, the only nocturnal monkey.
